Cruising Through Alaska on the Norwegian Encore – A Family Adventure of a Lifetime
Every year, my dad’s side of the family plans a big reunion. In 2024, instead of gathering at a vacation rental or lakeside cabin like we usually do, we decided to take things up a notch – with an Alaskan cruise! Over 30 family members, traveling in from all over the country, met up in Seattle to kick off our adventure. (Side note: if you haven’t read the Seattle blog, check it out – spending a couple of days exploring the city before the cruise was absolutely worth it!)
We boarded the beautiful Norwegian Encore at Pier 66, ready for a week filled with breathtaking scenery, thrilling excursions, and unforgettable moments together.
Coordinating a group this size can be daunting, but we had an amazing travel agent, Chelsey Jennings from Expedia Cruises, who handled it all seamlessly – from securing group reservations to organizing dining plans and room layouts. If you’re planning a big family trip, we highly recommend her! (You can reach her at: cjennings@expediacruises.com.)
The cruise was everything we hoped for and more. Our days were filled with incredible meals, belly laughs as we reminisced about the good old days, spontaneous dance parties, and matching reunion shirts designed by my super creative niece, Mahi. From group photos to late-night chats on the deck, it was a memory-packed week we’ll treasure forever.

Choosing Our Home at Sea
Now, full disclosure: my husband is not a cruise type. Something about the idea of a floating hotel room with no escape to solid ground didn’t sit well with him. And our older daughter tends to get motion sick, so we had a few extra concerns.
That’s why we opted for a Family Club Balcony Suite, mid-ship…pro tip: mid-ship cabins help reduce the effects of motion and offer the most stability. The balcony turned out to be our favorite feature. Every morning, we’d open the curtains to postcard-worthy views of glacial blue waters, mist-covered mountains, and the occasional breaching whale in the distance. There’s something magical about sipping hot coffee in your robe while watching the Alaskan wilderness glide by. One morning while running at the gym (yes, I packed my guilt along with my sneakers), I looked up to see whales casually circling the ship. Surreal doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Living the High Life in The Haven
Several members of our family booked rooms in The Haven – Norwegian’s luxury suite area. The perks were hard to ignore: a private lounge, exclusive deck space, and a rooftop hot tub with unbeatable views. Technically, The Haven is for Haven guests only… but let’s just say we “unofficially” made it a family hangout space. #SorryNotSorry
Pro Tip: If your budget allows, The Haven is 100% worth it. The level of service and access to exclusive areas made it feel like a ship within a ship.

Foodies Rejoice: Dining on the Norwegian Encore
Our family loves to eat – and even more, we love exploring different cuisines together. Whether it was a quick bite between activities or a long, indulgent dinner, the Norwegian Encore had something for every craving. From comforting classics to bold international flavors, every meal was a highlight. Here are some of our absolute favorites:
Specialty Dining (Reservations Required!)
- Food Republic – Tapas-style Asian-Latin fusion. Perfect for sharing and exploring bold, global flavors.
- Onda by Scarpetta – Elegant, modern Italian. The signature spaghetti with tomato and basil was chef’s kiss.
- The Haven Restaurant – Exclusive and intimate. We had breakfast here one morning and it was a serene, luxurious start to the day.
Complimentary Dining
- Garden Café – The buffet to end all buffets. Bonus points for the Indian food station, which was a huge hit with the parents.
- Savor, Taste & Manhattan Room – Each had distinct decor and ambiance but equally delicious menus that changed daily.
- American Diner – A fun 50’s-style spot perfect for a late-night bite or nostalgic lunch.
Pro Tip: Book your specialty dining reservations as soon as you can, ideally before you board. They fill up quickly!

Onboard Entertainment & Activities
There was never a dull moment onboard. From Broadway-style shows to VR adventures, everyone – from toddlers to teens to grandparents – found something to love.
- The Choir of Man – Hands-down our favorite show. A live performance full of music, dance, and pub-style singalongs. It felt like a party and a concert all in one.
- Deal or No Deal – Interactive and exciting. We didn’t win, but had a blast cheering from the audience.
- Levity Comedy Club – Shoutout to comedian Tyler Boeh who had us rolling with laughter.
- Magic Show by Anthony Salazar – I was “voluntold” to participate by my entire family pointing at me when he asked for a volunteer… thanks, guys.
- Galaxy Pavilion – Think virtual reality arcade meets immersive gaming. Our kids (and let’s be honest, the adults too) LOVED it. Worth the extra cost.
- Encore Speedway – Go-karting at sea! A massive hit with the kids.
- Aqua Park – Waterslides, splash zones, and lounge chairs galore. We spent a relaxing afternoon here.
- Mandara Spa – Moms-only spa afternoon? Yes, please. Total recharge.
- Pulse Fitness Center – My personal sanctuary to balance out the buffet indulgences.
- Social – Dance.Laugh.Be Social!
Pro Tip: Try to plan your show and activity reservations early in the cruise (or before), especially for popular performances like The Choir of Man and the comedy shows.

Shore Excursions: Alaska Up Close
Every port offered something unique and beautiful:
🧊 Juneau: Glaciers, Rainforests & a Gentle Sense of Awe
- In Juneau, we journeyed through what felt like three worlds in one: ice, forest, and river.
- Our first stop was Mendenhall Glacier – a massive, slow-moving river of ice that left us speechless. Standing at the viewpoint, we were wrapped in a chilly breeze that carried the cleanest air we’ve ever breathed. The crystalline blue ice, creaking and cracking in the distance, reminded us that nature is alive and powerful. We took our time capturing photos, but also paused often just to listen to the stillness – interrupted only by the occasional bird or distant splash.
- Next, we entered the vibrant greens of Glacier Gardens, a magical temperate rainforest tucked into the mountains. A tram carried us through moss-draped trees, blooming floral displays, and whimsical upside-down flower towers (yes, actual upside-down trees used as flower pots!). At the top, we stepped out onto a scenic platform that offered panoramic views of Juneau’s winding waterways and forested valleys. It felt like something out of a dream.
- Pro tip: Dress in layers. The weather can change by the hour.

🚂 Skagway: White Pass Railway, Klondike Gold Fields & Panning excursion
If Juneau was serene, Skagway was epic. We boarded the White Pass & Yukon Route Railway—a charming vintage railcar that took us on a winding ascent into the mountains. As we climbed toward the clouds, we were surrounded by sheer cliffs, gushing waterfalls, and dizzying views of the valleys below. The train’s rhythmic chugging and creaky wooden interiors only added to it all.
Of course, in true Bollywood-meets-Alaska style, we had to recreate the DDLJ train scene—because how often do you get a dramatic, cinematic mountain train ride with your whole family watching and cheering you on? Thanks again to Meera for capturing the moment like a pro!

🌲 Ketchikan: Slowing Down in the Rainy Capital
By the time we reached Ketchikan, the misty rain was softly falling, and it couldn’t have been more perfect. Known as Alaska’s “First City,” Ketchikan welcomed us with colorful storefronts, friendly locals, and a slower pace that felt like a warm hug after days of high adventure.Rather than plan a formal excursion, we chose to explore like locals. We went on a peaceful forest hike, surrounded by moss-covered trees and the comforting sound of rain tapping on leaves. The air smelled of cedar and ocean salt. After our walk, we ducked into a local shop called Jelly Donuts, where the coffee was strong, and the donuts were fresh, warm, and fluffy. It was a sweet little moment of calm and connection.

🌸 Victoria, BC: Elegant Charm at Twilight
Our stop in Victoria was in the evening, adding an almost storybook ambiance to the experience. The harbor glowed under soft golden light, and the historic buildings looked straight out of a European painting.
We strolled through downtown Victoria, admiring flower-lined streets, vintage lampposts, and the majestic Fairmont Empress Hotel lit up against the night sky. It was peaceful and walkable – an ideal stop for just soaking up a bit of old-world charm before heading back to the ship.

🧊 Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve: The Crown Jewel
And then… there was Glacier Bay.
Nothing can prepare you for the quiet grandeur of this place. Massive glaciers tumbled down from mountain peaks, meeting the sea with a crack and thunder that echoed across the water. The ship glided silently through the bay, and the captain did a full 360° spin so every single passenger could take in the view.
They opened the forward deck, and it felt like we were on the front lines of the planet’s last untouched places. My husband (bless him) put me on his shoulders so I could take some wide-angle shots. It was part sweet gesture, part comic scene, but the photos? Absolutely epic!!
It was in Glacier Bay that we felt the deepest stillness. The water was mirror-like, the air was crisp, and the landscape was beyond anything we had seen – wild, ancient, and humbling.

- Research Each Port: Decide whether to explore independently or go through Norwegian’s excursions.

🧘♀️ Mindset Matters
- Cruises move fast – don’t try to do everything. Prioritize your must-dos and build in time to relax.
- Expect a bit of chaos with big groups – lean into the fun and flexibility.
- Lastly, disconnect to reconnect: some of our favorite moments happened when we simply sat together on the balcony or at dinner, sharing laughs, views, and stories.
🌟 Final Thoughts
If you’re considering a cruise – especially one with a large family group – the Norwegian Encore is a top-tier experience that beautifully balances comfort, luxury, and once-in-a-lifetime adventure. It’s the kind of trip where every generation finds something to love, whether it’s the thrill of racing on the Encore Speedway, quiet moments at The Haven Lounge, or bonding over a shared plate of pasta at Onda.
Cruising through Alaska isn’t just about the views (though they are jaw-dropping) – it’s about creating space to slow down and reconnect, something we don’t always get to do in the bustle of everyday life. From watching whales breach just outside your balcony, to singing along at The Choir of Man, to racing through the rain in Ketchikan with cousins you haven’t seen in years – it all adds up to something magical.
Most importantly, take it all in. Laugh a little louder. Eat the second dessert. Dance at the teen club with your kids. Hold your partner’s hand on the balcony. Sip hot chocolate while staring at a glacier and just… be.
This trip gave us so much more than beautiful photos…it gave us shared stories, unforgettable views, and memories that we’ll be talking about for years to come.
Until next time, Alaska. Cheers! 🐋❄️🚢
